The spreading of a jet discharge horizontally at the surface of a quiescent receiving water of slightly larger density is investigated, assuming that the bulk Richardson number is moderate. The derivation of the basic flow equation, including conservation of mass, is briefly mentioned. Using perturbation theory two different approximations are obtained. In the first-order approximation, the longitudinal inertia dominates and similarity of the velocity profiles in different cross sections is assumed. The second-order theory is formulated and an exact solution of the equations is presented. The conclusion is that similarity of the velocity profiles cannot in general be assumed except close to the outlet. The second-order solution explains observed features that are not described by a first-order theory.
