The draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) displays ten alternative ways of managing the land and resources of the Winema National Forest to provide for the multiple use and sustained yield of goods and services from the Forest. The DEIS and proposed Forest Plan are circulated for public review and comment and a final environmental impact statement and Forest Plan will be developed, based in part on public comments. The DEIS identifies a preferred alternative, Alternative E, which is the action described in detail in the proposed Forest Plan. The Preferred Alternative, selected by the Regional Forester, is considered to be the alternative that at this time, maximizes net public benefits in an environmentally sound manner. This summary of the DEIS describes the: environment affected by the proposed action; purpose and need for the proposed action; the major issues and concerns regarding the management of the Forest; the ten alternatives considered in detail; and the environmental consequences of implementing each alternative" P.
