Evaluation of the effect of sampler size on sample disturbance in sensitive Leda clay
The Division of Building Research has undertaken a study of the geotechnical properties of the so-called "Leda" clay. This is an extremely sensitive post-glacial marine clay occurring extensively in the lowlands of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa valleys. In the course of this study, serious limitations have been found in the techniques of obtaining undistorted tube samples from boreholes. This report deals with the relative effectiveness of four conventional Shelby tube samplers. Since this study was made, it has been found that all tube samples fail to give strength results consistently comparable to shear strength determinations obtained by field vane testing. Hence the problem of sampling is still under review, and this report represents one stage in a long-term study. It is issued in the hope that it will prove useful to others concerned with the problem of obtaining samples of this clay. ; Peer reviewed: No ; NRC publication: Yes
