Recreation – it‘s a space for people to spend their leisure time, which includes not only physical, but also psychological refreshment. In the context of architecture, this concept is understood as a certain type of zone, which is characterized by a wide spectrum of spaces, consisting of different elements, focused on people's recreation and comfort. Spaces can have a different recreational structure, for example, it can be green areas, spaces promoting communication or active lifestyle, public spaces providing recreational services, etc. The lack of this type of zones in the living people‘s close living environment can negatively affect not only the attractiveness of the district, but also the emotional state of the people living in it. The aim of this work is to highlight the importance of recreation in residential areas. The research paper analyzes the residential Romainiai district of the city of Kaunas. A comprehensive analysis of this area uses the set of elements suggested by Kevin Lynch's urban analysis. Using it, it was noticed that the district is characterized by dense residential construction, but the communication infrastructure is poorly developed - there are no bike lanes and a lack of public transport stops and their routes. In the district, there are green areas - forest interspersed between areas of dense residential construction, but these spaces are not adapted for successful use of spaces or recreation. After analyzing the historical context of the Romainiai district, the current condition and a quantitative survey of the district's residents, a network of recreational and public spaces is created - the functions are specified in the public purpose areas provided for in the Kaunas City General Plan 2013 - 2023, the existing plots in the district are formed and used, according to the established analysis criteria.
