An assessment of current iceberg management capabilities
Iceberg management for the protection of offshore hydrocarbon facilities and operations involves detection, monitoring, decision making, and (if necessary) response. The appropriate response to an iceberg threat may be some form of physical management, and/or changes to the operational status of exploration or production activities. This report evaluates the state-of-the-art capabilities for the physical management of icebergs. A review has been conducted of iceberg management techniques in current practice, techniques that have been tested as prototypes, and some of the techniques that have been proposed but never tested. These methods have been assessed in terms of equipment requirements, reliability, safety, environmental impact, ease of handling, operating limits, and cost. Areas are identified in which improvements to iceberg management techniques are prospective, and may lead to significant increases in operational efficiency. ; Peer reviewed: No ; NRC publication: Yes
