SEISMIC VULNERABILITY OF EXISTING SCHOOLS
The Italian school buildings asset consists of over 40,000 units. The most (about 60%) were built before the introduction of the national standard on school buildings and constructions in seismic areas. This research aims to implement a methodology for seismic risk analysis of ex-isting school buildings. To assess the seismic vulnerability different strategies have been de-veloped accordingly with the standards procedures. Visual screening during inspections and the study of the existing documentation represent the first step. Then a refined SHM approach that includes non-destructive testing on site and structural analysis is proposed. The numerical models of the buildings are validated through the results of the SHM phase. They will be use-ful to identify the vulnerability of the existing buildings and different computational proce-dures will be investigated. A real structure application completes the investigation. In particu-lar, an existing building school in North Italy is analyzed as a case study to originally test the proposed methodology.
