This article discusses the environmental issue from the social conflict perspective. Here, social struggles involving environmental issues are considered as moments in which an “environmental field” is built, where the conditions for material and symbolical appropriation of a territorial resource base are at stake. The “environmental field” notion conceived as a field of forces attempts to express the relational dynamics of the social world, where individuals and social groups that occupy different positions in a social space made up of relationships come into disagreements that challenge the material and symbolical distribution of power. In this way, environmental conflicts establish the environment as a category around which social practices are classified according to different legitimacy levels.
