Principles of learning and teaching a foreign language at an architectural school
Somewhat unusual parallel is drawn in this paper between architecture and teaching/learning a foreign language. It is thought that both activities cover similar processes - design and building, but in different worlds... one of the material culture, the other - in the space of ideational constructs of some foreign culture whose material and spiritual objects should be segmented, classified, named and their names learnt...The whole process is being executed in a different way from the one which student encounters in his native language. By investigating the principles of teaching and learning the author methodologically starts from the architectural principles expressed in Confessions, a book by a Czech architect Jan Caplicky the founder of Future systems (an architectural group located in London), and tries to explore how these principles which Caplicky suggests as relevant for the design process in architecture can be applied in one apparently very distant space of human activity - learning and teaching a foreign language at an architectural school.
