URDIMBRE Y TRAMA: EL CASO DE LA UNIVERSIDAD LIBRE DE BERLÍN / Warp and weft: the case of the Free University of Berlin
RESUMEN Fruto de los debates mantenidos por los protagonistas del Team 10 a lo largo de la década de los 60, surgen una serie de edificios que, años después, Alison Smithson denominará mat-buildings. Éstos se caracterizan por ser construcciones de baja altura y alta densidad, definidas por una estructura en red cuya flexibilidad permite la adaptación con holgura a las variaciones de un programa. La Freie Universität de Berlín, de los arquitectos Georges Candilis, Alexis Josic y Shadrach Woods, se convierte en el paradigma de estos “edificios alfombra”, un proyecto en cuya gestación se revela la presencia combinada de la permanencia y la alteración de sus elementos. Los mencionados términos, opuestos en su significación, se necesitan aquí mutuamente para la conformación del tejido compositivo, del mismo modo que la urdimbre del telar permanece estable frente a las variaciones de la trama en la construcción de un tapiz. El presente artículo trata de profundizar en esta obra con el fin de desvelar los pormenores relativos a su proceso de construcción formal. SUMMARY As a result of the debates held by Team 10’s major figures during the 1960’s, there arose a series of buildings which, years later, Alison Smithson would call mat-buildings. These are characterized by low-rise and high constructions, defined by a web structure whose flexibility allows easy adaptation to programme’s changes. The Freie Universität of Berlín, by architects Georges Candilis, Alexis Josic and Shadrach Woods, became the paradigm of these mat-buildings, a project whose gestation revealed the combined presence of the permanence and the alteration of its elements. The above terms, opposite in significance, are mutually needed here for the formation of the composite fabric, just as the warp of the weave remains stable against the variations of the weft in the weaving of a tapestry. This article tries to delve deeper into this work in order to reveal the details concerning its formal construction process.
