A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In the traditional fabric of Beijing, we can hardly find any organized public spaces organized from the western point of view (with squares, streets or parks). However, historical areas like Shichahai District, show an active urban life. The lack of public realm could not stop urban activity. On the contrary, the prosperous and spontaneous social life constituted exceptional historical areas such as Dashila. Today, traditional fabrics are being replaced by western urban spaces (green and open). Yet these public spaces have not contributed to public life. In fact, grannies play Yangko, a traditional folk dance, under overpasses instead of the well-designed new squares. People are more willing to share their social life inside courtyards rather than on the streets.
