Bridge replaces pontoon bridge which had carried main trunk road traffic between Penang, Ipoh Kuala Lumpur and Singapore for nearly 40 yr; it is 928 ft long between center of abutment bearings; central span is 160 ft between centers of piers; arch ribs supported on mass-concrete piers and abutments; total cost of work was £ 175,000.
