Use of surcharges in highway construction
Benefits of surcharges and waiting periods in highway construction are predicted by application of principles of soil mechanics; use of methods minimizes amount of detrimental settlement subsequent to paving; time-consolidation data are used to determine length of waiting periods; unconfined and quick-undrained triaxial compression test results are used to determine safe height of embankments; methods used in design and construction of embankments across 4 lagoons in San Diego County, Calif are examined.
