Tumut 2 underground power plant
Comprehensive program of field exploration, rock tests, photoelastic model studies, and instrumentation carried out for plant is described; plant was sited and orientated from geological information obtained from exploratory tunnel and diamond drilling; properties of in-situ rock mass were obtained from flat-jack and plate-bearing tests that indicated presence of high horizontal rock stresses; shape of main openings, design of concrete arch roof, and sequence of excavation, were determined from photoelastic model studies conducted to predict change in pattern of rock stresses as excavation of underground openings proceeded downwards.
