Solution of vibration problems experienced with Howell-Bunger valves at Round Butte dam
Three 2.44-m Howell-Bunger valves (conical discharge jet) were installed at Round Butte power plant in Oregon, to serve as bypass to discharge up to 170 m3/s each under 94.5 m net head; unusual feature is that valves are submerged under tail-water head of about 10 m; operation resulted in severe vibration with eventual failure; air supply was ineffective against back pressure; model test program was initiated in manufacturer's laboratory and later at plant where steady fullhead and tail-water pressure were available; model testing resulted in satisfactory solution.
