Two-dimensional problem of earth pressure at rest in noncohesive soils
It is shown that Brinch-Hansen's method of calculating earth pressure at rest (EPR) for slopes is unsatisfactory; new formula is derived in which ratio of principal stresses Ko is considered as function not only of angle of internal friction (rho) but also slope angle (β); under simplifying assumption that Ko equals (1-sin rho)/(1-sin β), formulas are derived for vertical and horizontal components of EPR coefficients; examples of EPR applications, and limitations of EPR calculation are discussed.
