Evaluation of several expanded aggregates for use in skid resistant pavement surfaces
Laboratory and field experiments performed on light weight expanded shale surfaces indicated large increases in skid resistance over surfaces constructed of limestone aggregates; increase was almost directly proportional to amount of expanded shale aggregate used in surface; virtually no additional cost is incurred in use of expanded shale mix as opposed to regular paving mix used in Tennessee; available data are insufficient to evaluate comparative durability of expanded shale mix; however, after nearly two years of service no defects in integrity of experimental pavement surface were observed.
