Application and Field Evaluation of Very Thin Skid Resistant Pavement Surfaces
The objective of this study was to improve skid resistance on worn, structurally sound, portland cement concrete pavements. This was accomplished through the evaluation of predetermined mixes and application techniques in the field through the application of very thin, concrete overlays. The overlays 3/8 inch or less in depth, were applied by two distinct application techniques, brooming and screeding. The four predetermined mixes were applied in twelve overlays. The goals of the field work were: (1) evaluation of the application techniques; (2) evaluation of the predetermined mixes; (3) evaluation of adhesion. The evaluation of the mixes with respect to performance over time and adhesion will be monitored for a period of one year. At that time the most promising overlays will then be considered for further testing on a larger scale. This report covers the field work installation of the overlays.
