Susceptibility to brittle fracture of maraging steel N18K9M5T (MS 200) and high strength martensitic steel; development of crack begins at stress considerably below fracture strength of material; slow development of crack is explained by growth of plastically deformed zone in proportion to size of crack; the greater critical length of crack and fracture strength, the higher resistance to propagation of crack; plastic deformation in front of crack tip leads to relaxation of local stress field and counteracts transformation of crack from ductile to brittle.
