Structure examined from fundamental bases of theory of glass structure; structure of normal lead bisilicate is inherently weak and more susceptible to attack; this results in high values for percentages of soluble lead when frits are subjected to normal solubility tests: how frits may be strengthened; addition of alumina to frit or substitution of alumina for silica in frit up to certain specified limits will have this result.
