When 14 × 8 ft access tunnel for Alpha, (Ill) Coal Co, had been advanced 375 ft, work had to be halted because of water pouring in through waterbearing sand layer; remedy was driving of pipes and injection of gel forming silicate of soda and calcium chloride which solidified sand.
