Le palier flottant
Floating bearing; note by P. GERARD, indexed in Engineering Index 1947 p 128, from Academie des Sciences -- Comptes Rendus July 16 1947, described new type of bearing which eliminates vibration by allowing shaft to rotate about its axis of inertia; shaft, supported entirely by fluid pressure, makes no contact with bearing; energy expended in compressing fluid is generally justified by reduction in frictional loss. (See also Genie Civil v 125 n 13 July 1 1948 p 251-3; English abstract in Engrs' Digest (British Edition) v 9 n 10 Oct 1948 p 336)
