Excavating, 55 ft deep and 115 ft wide in unreliable sand; required novel cut and cover method; materials required for tunnel amount to 20,000 tons of steel sheet piling, 70,000 tons of steel sections and 650,000 cu yd of concrete; volume of excavated earth totaled 1,300, 000 cu yd; two viaducts 630 and 3000 ft long, respectively, and bridges were also included in work.
