Prestressed concrete simplifies construction of breakwater/wharf
Effective breakwater/wharf was constructed by using precast prestressed channels for deck, and precast prestressed sheathing along seaward face of structure; structure is located on inlet connected to Bay of Fundy with tidal range of 25 ft; wharf is 40 ft wide and extends 406 ft out into harbor; it is joined to approach by bridge span 66 ft long, consisting of six precast prestressed I-beams and 7 in. reinforced concrete slab; piling consists of 14-in. concrete-filled steel pipe piles; prestressed concrete channels, spanning 37 ft across wharf, are supported on pile caps; prestressed concrete sheathing is driven 9 ft into underlying soils; fendering consists of wood springing system with creosoted piles at 5-ft centers.
