Topeka's water-supply intake in Kansas River kept clear of sand bars by skeleton spur dikes of concrete placed near midstream; retards consist of four reinforced-concrete arms 5 in. diam.; cast individually and arms disposed as diagonals of rectangular prism with base 5×5 ft. and height of 7 ft.
