Heightening of Assouan dam
Though height has been increased by 9 m, water level upstream has only been allowed to rise 8 m; false buttresses were omitted, tops of real buttresses being surmounted by ornamental ashlar cap; raising of water level necessitated erection of 90 new sluice gates and reconstruction of remaining 89; total length of dam is 2129 m, compared with 1960 m in 1902 and 1982 m after first heightening in 1912.
