Impact on railway bridges
Review of report of Bridge Stress Committee, appointed in 1923, by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research; stresses in individual members were measured by means of stress recorders; behavior of 52 structures, ranging in span from sixteen and one-half to 345 ft. was studied; existing formulas for measuring impact are unsuitable, none of them taking into account chief cause of impact in railway bridges which has been traced to unbalanced masses revolving in driving wheels of locomotives; formula by means of which magnitude of vibrations produced by passage of engine over bridge may be determined; tables for judging safety of bridges.
