Quick firing produces large amount of drying heat
For artificial drying long firing zone is desirable which should amount to fourth of total length of firing tunnel; clays not naturally suitable for quick firing can be treated by addition of organic substance, such as bitumen; waste heat produced by slow burning cannot be readily utilized, but considerable amount of heat is radiated from interior kiln walls during quick firing and sufficient heat can be obtained to effect artificial drying of 60 per cent of kiln output.
