Mathematical study of stresses set up in subsiding strata; factors affecting roof movements; rate of advance of face; regularity of advance; method of packing; method of supporting face; in South Wales coal mines, ultimate total subsidence approaches 50 per cent of thickness of seam; other effects which must be studied are presence of gas, ventilation of face and maintenance of roads; use of steel props and steel arch girders is urged.
