Corrosion of steel in finely cracked reinforced and prestressed concrete
Research was carried out by Chief Civil Engineer's Dept. Eastern Region, British Railways, and Research Dept of British Railways Board to investigate whether corrosion of reinforcing steel is caused by penetration of highly polluted air into microcracks or hair cracks in reinforced and prestressed concrete under sustained loading; two concrete beams prestressed with post-tensioning tendons reinforced and two short reinforced concrete members were tested; each reinforced beam contained four 0.2 in. diam wires and had 1 in. cover in one beam and 1/2 in. cover in other; test exposure of 1 yr to sulfurous fumes showed no substantial corrosive effect.
