Corrosion of steel in finely-cracked reinforced and prestressed concrete
Investigation to determine whether corrosion of reinforcing steel occurs due to penetration of highly polluted air into micro-cracks in reinforced and prestressed concrete under sustained loading; tests on 2 prestressed concrete beams with post-tensioned tendons which were embedded in cement mortar along central parts of beams, and 2 short reinforced concrete members each containing 4 0.2-in. wires, with 1 in. and 1/2 in. cover respectively, exposed to sulfur-dioxide fumes, indicate that fine hair-cracks were not detrimental as regards corrosion.
