Inelastic buckling gradient is defined as initial slope at tangent modulus buckling load of curve obtained by plotting column load as ordinate and maximum lateral column deflection as abscissa; formulas for gradient for bisymmetric or monosymmetric cross section and for continuously strain hardening material are studied, revealing alternative post-buckling modes of behavior for tee section; inelastic buckling gradient for bisymmetric structural steel column containing different patterns of initial residual stresses is also examined.
