A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Review of studies published by several research workers on various factors causing failures of cement; main factors in question are free lime, magnesia, and sulfates in conjunction with sufficiently high tricalcium aluminate content; it is shown that critical maximum magnesia content ranges from about 3 to 5% according to cooling rate of clinker; free lime content of less than 2% increases substantially tendency to expansion caused by magnesia; possibility of expansion is also increased when concrete structure is in contact with water and moisture; autoclave test is shown as reliable indicator of cement failure.
