Response of buried structural models to static and dynamic overpressures
Studies were conducted on four cylindrical shell models; three models have hemispherical end closures and diameter-thickness ratios of 40, 80, and 160; other model (D/t=80) had end closure system which could not transmit load to shell; work was conducted using dry cohesionless soil medium of uniformly graded silica sand (Ottawa sand); for each model complete analysis was made of central transverse plane shell; conclusions are drawn regarding influences of model stiffness, overpressure level, rate of loading, and end closure system on hoop and longitudinal membrane forces and bending moments in shells.
