A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Novel features in design and construction of bridge with 3240 ft main span that will carry twin 24-ft roadways separated by 10-ft median strip, and 12-ft footpath and 12-ft bicycle track; suspended structure is six-sided continuous-welded steel box, 10-ft deep by 75-ft wide, with 15-ft cantilevered decks on each side, making width 105-ft; longitudinal diaphragm plates at 15-ft intervals keep box rigid; suspenders are single 2-in. diam spiral strands, socketed at their ends, and inclined maximum of 25° from vertical along bridge to damp vibration in suspended structure; two 445-ft high steel towers share same design philosophy that produced deck.
