Ingenuity and prestressing make low-cost bridge
Bridge's 131-ft central span was constructed with 38 precast concrete blocks, manufactured nearby and moved into place by block-and-tackle lifting device and cableway strung over river; bridge was built deep in forests of state of Veracruz, Mexico; method made it possible to overcome limited funds, limited construction time and shortages of conventional construction equipment and skilled labor; arrangement of prestressing cables was used to resist dead loads during construction, another to accommodate stresses from live and dead loads in finished structure.
