Large concrete bridge arches built without falsework
Taf Fechan bridge, 392 ft long has 227 ft 6 1/4 in. arch span; 280 ft Nant Hir has arch span of 184 ft; both bridges are cantilevering out from abutments entirely without falsework based on placement of rib concrete on traveling shutter, supported by already-constructed rib section; rib is suspended by 1/2-in. diam strand suspension cables; these are anchored to temporary tower raised on bridge deck over arch springing; forces in tower are balanced by further cables anchored in arch abutment; to ensure safety, load on each strand is generally kept as low as 6 tons; strands are individually stressed; changes in suspension forces, as construction goes ahead, are obtained by stressing or destressing required number of cables.
