Set retarded concrete placed in bridge deck and finished with conven tional equipment exhibited severe surface deterioration in form of flaking several days after paving; similar concrete placed in approach slab on granular subgrade did not flake; laboratory and field investigations showed that flaking was caused by formation of weak plane immediately below surface of concrete and was closely connected with bleeding characteristics of mix; solution was found in reducing bleeding rate of concrete by change in type of set retarding admixture.
