Bridge Deck Deterioration Study. Part 3. Special Bridge Deck Surface Treatments
Twenty seven bridge deck surfaces were used to test various seal materials. Eight different materials were placed on a total of 16 decks. Eleven bridge decks remained untreated and to a degree served as controls. The condition of the 27 decks were evaluated yearly for five years. The following conclusions were drawn from this study: (1) Several of the materials used failed to offer protection inasmuch as 25 percent or more of the deck surface was deteriorated at the end of the test; (2) The performance of the apparently good seals is uncertain because several unsealed control decks and unsealed control portions of decks also had little or no damage; (3) Untreated bridge deck surfaces with low traffic volumes had little deterioration.
