Effect of strain rate on undrained strength of varved clay
Multiple-stage, consolidated-undrained triaxial shear testing program, using side filters to facilitate pore pressure equalization, was carried out on samples of varved clay obtained from borehole at New Liskeard, Ont; rates of strain were varied from 0.4 to 0.007% strain/min to determine effect of strain rate on apparent undrained shearing strength of clay; general index properties of separate layers in varved clay samples were investigated, and were found to remain substantially constant over entire 100 ft depth of borehole tested.
