Effect of aging on shear-strength properties of normally consolidated clay
Triaxial tests on samples which were normally consolidated for different periods of time prior to subsequent shear test; with time clay becomes more brittle with smaller failure strains and undrained shear strength shows slight increase; study of stress-strain curves leads to conclusion that effect of time can be explained by growing of cohesive bonds at contact points between particles; cohesive bonds lead to greater resistance against shear deformation, but they are gradually destroyed for increasing strain.
