Normal stress distribution along contact surface of flexible strip footing is independent of magnitude of contact shearing stresses and this is true for particular limiting case of elastic constant of supporting soil of one-half; method is developed for case of strip subjected to concentrated loads and moments; conclusions suggest that commonly accepted assumption of smooth contact surface leads to conservative estimate of maximum bending moment and shearing force induced in foundation.
