Moisture-expansion characteristics of fired kaolinite-hydrous mica-quartz clay
Relation was established between natural and autoclave moisture expansions which, with moisture expansion peak at about 1000 C, is explained in terms of poorly crystalline and noncrystalline phases developed during firing; there is linear relation between magnitude of expansion and log of time of exposure to moisture in air, and also for specimens fired from 1000 to 1150 C and autoclaved from 2 to 200 hr; from magnitude of expansion after short period, expansion to be expected within period to which preexisting data referred could be estimated.
