Mechanical and chemical capping of rimming steel ingots with pouring from top
Both methods of capping (mechanical method more so than chemical), improve structure of top portion of ingot, and reduce chemical heterogeneity along its height; this reduces top discards during rolling, increases uniformity of composition, and improves some mechanical properties; however, application of chemical capping is recommended because of advantages during pouring and better quality of rolled surface in production of shaped ingots. (see also English translation in Stal in English n 10 Oct 1963 p 775-81)
