Improving quality of rimming steel ingots
When bottom pouring open hearth and converter rimming steel in semiclosed ingot molds (small end up), ingots can be covered by concave lids not later than 5 to 8 min after mold is filled; this reduces chemical heterogeneity from top to bottom of ingot and makes it possible to reduce amount of top discard while, in case of low carbon steels of Sv-08 welding type, it greatly reduces loss of manganese; improved rolling conditions at blooming mill obtained. (see also English translation in Stal in English n 4 Apr 1967 p 296-9)
