Studies on mechanisms of alkali-carbonate reaction -- 1. Chemical reactions
Results of laboratory studies made to determine mechanisms of alkali-carbonate rock reaction which result in expansion of concrete are reported; quartz, clays and carbonates were investigated through studies of pure minerals, as well as reactive and nonreactive rocks, to determine what possible role each might play in observed expansion in composite system; major constituents were analyzed and measured by variety of methods to determine chemical composition, phase composition, and volume and mass of materials before and after exposure to sodium and potassium hydroxide solutions.
