Hydrodynamic pressures generated on high gravity dams, both vertical and inclined to vertical, due to vertical earthquake motions were obtained numerically by using `finite element' method; dynamic pressures due to steady-state vertical ground motion were determined for frequencies of motion both higher and lower than fundamental frequency of reservoir system; effect of linearized condition at free surface of reservoir on dynamic pressures; subsequent use of pressures for computing pressure responses due to arbitrary vertical motions is discussed.
