Comprehensive port construction program executed during 1956-1966 period at total cost of 140 million francs, consisted of extension of existing breakwaters, quays, and channels, as well as building of new ones; description of work executed in Tandjung-Priok and Semarang (Java), Balikpapan and Bandjermasin (Borneo), and Belawan (Sumatra); 60,000 tons of cement and 10,500 tons of steel were imported from France; project employed from 15 to 90 European engineers and specialists, and from 400 to 1800 Indonesian workers.
