10-Ft-OD concrete pipe is jacked without spalling
Technique to shove 10-ft-OD concrete pipe through unmined sand beneath busy railroad is described; total of 500 ft of reinforced concrete pipe was jacked on grade 35 ft below New York Central railroad tracks; steel spacers and jacking ring were designed specially to transfer thrust of eight 150-ton jacking cylinders to concrete pipe; celotex bearing pads were packed in bell-and-spigot joints of pipe to cushion force and reduce point bearing; muck was mined out through pipe while jacks shoved forward at 1 ft/hr.
