Foundation drilling methods through deep water
Four miles off California's coast near Los Angeles, Calweld reverse-circulation rig is drilling 36-in. diam holes 55 ft below ocean floor through hard brown shale rock on 1 to 12 batter both ways to form legs of offshore oil-drilling platform; reverse-circulation machine is skid-mounted, weighs about 5 1/2 tons, and can be lifted to drilling position by 75-ton derrick barge which services this operation; drill rig is completing 7 ft/hr on average, maintaining 8 1/2 tons of down pressure on roller-type bit; Baker oil tool air-actuated reamer enlarged hole to its full 36-in. diam; steel pile shells were stabbed into ocean floor as each leg was completed, and grouted until concrete forced up to superstructure elevation of platform; piles were cut off and welded to template to make temporary bond.
