Long-boomed backhoe digs deep trench
Open trench, 21 ft wide, 28 ft deep, for concrete sewer in Chicago, Ill, was excavated by 2 1/2 cu yd drag shovel which removed up to 1500 cu yd of excavation in 9 hr shift; boom of shovel is 32 ft, and dipper stick 17 ft long; concrete was placed through metal chute which discharged into flexible elephant trunk tremie to avoid segregation of materials.
